How Air Conditioners Work

The modern air conditioner was invented in 1902 to solve the problem of high humidity in a lithography and publication business. The workers found that the paper became moist and stuck together during the summer months which caused the inking process to become difficult. Willis Carrier developed a method of cooling by blowing air over chilled pipes. Because colder air cannot hold as much moisture as warm air, it also acted as a dehumidifier.

Today’s air conditioners work because when a liquid is converted to a gas, it absorbs heat. Chemicals called refrigerants cycle through different coils and alternate between the liquid and gas phase repeatedly. Two types of basic coils exist, evaporating- and condensing coils.

A fan runs warm air from your house over the evaporator coils, and the refrigerant absorbs the heat and turns into a gas. As the heat is absorbed from the air, it cools. The refrigerant is placed under high pressure in the compressor which heats it up. The heated gas is pumped to the condenser on the outside where fans help the excess heat escape to the outside. The process cools the refrigerant and changes it back to a liquid where it is pumped back into the evaporator to start the process all over again.

Today’s air conditioners act as dehumidifiers just as Willis Carrier’s prototype did over a hundred years ago. As a result, an essential component is the drainage system to release excess water. The drain needs to be inspected on a regular basis to be sure that it’s not plugged or emptying into an area that can cause rot or mould. Other components also need routine maintenance to ensure efficiency.
